African and Caribbean nations unite in Ghana to demand formal slavery reparations
This week, leaders from over 80 African and Caribbean nations gathered in Accra, Ghana, for a landmark summit to finalize a global framework for reparatory justice.
The coalition is demanding formal apologies from former slave-trading nations, alongside debt relief and financial compensation for centuries of systemic exploitation. During the event, the Netherlands pledged to return 2,000 looted artifacts, while Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley introduced a manifesto detailing the specific harm done to African women. While French President Emmanuel Macron attended and expressed support for the cause, he cautioned that reparations should focus on restoration and truth rather than just monetary payments.
Ghana’s President Mahama has now established three global expert panels to transform these diplomatic demands into a permanent legal structure.
