Senator Jinggoy Estrada surrendered to police in Manila on Monday morning after a special court ordered his arrest on a charge of non-bailable plunder.
The charges allege that Estrada, a son of a former president, pocketed millions in kickbacks from a multi-billion dollar flood-control project. His arrest caused a brief standoff when Senate President Alan Peter Cayetano attempted to protect him from police, sparking a public clash with the Interior Secretary. This marks the third time Estrada has faced plunder charges, a specific high-level corruption crime in the Philippines reserved for large-scale theft of public funds.
Estrada and former infrastructure chief Manuel Bonoan are scheduled to be formally arraigned in court on Tuesday.
