On Friday, a federal judge in Virginia temporarily frozen President Trump’s $1.776 billion "Anti-Weaponization Fund" intended to pay supporters who claim they were victims of political prosecutions.
The administration created the fund to settle claims from allies like January 6 defendants, but critics and some Republicans have labeled it an unethical "slush fund." Former Vice President Mike Pence recently joined the backlash, calling the initiative "deeply offensive" and urging the president to scrap it. The judge's order follows lawsuits from Capitol Police and former prosecutors who argue the fund bypasses Congressional oversight to reward lawbreakers.
The White House must now decide whether to fight for the fund in court or abandon it to avoid a messy confirmation battle for the next attorney general.
