Kenyan authorities arrested eight female students on Friday following a devastating fire at Utumishi Girls Academy that killed 16 students.
The blaze broke out in a dormitory housing 200 girls in the town of Gilgil during the early hours of Thursday morning. Survivors reported the dormitory doors were locked from the inside during the inferno, leading to claims that the escape was intentionally blocked. Preliminary investigations suggest school officials ignored previous warnings of planned unrest by a group of senior students.
The Ministry of Education has dissolved the school's management board while detectives continue to interrogate dozens of other students suspected of involvement.
