EU warns of Russian trap while refusing neutral mediator role in peace talks
Today in Cyprus, European Union foreign ministers convened to establish a unified front regarding potential peace negotiations to end the war in Ukraine.
EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas warned that debating which specific envoy should represent Europe is a Kremlin 'trap' designed to fracture Western unity. Officials clarified that because the bloc is actively arming Kyiv, it cannot legally or strategically act as a neutral mediator between the two warring nations. Key demands for a lasting settlement include the total withdrawal of Russian troops not only from Ukraine, but also from occupied regions in Georgia and Moldova.
The EU intends to cement this alliance by opening all formal membership negotiating clusters for Ukraine as early as next month.
