On Monday, federal agents pepper-sprayed U.S. Senator Andy Kim and dozens of protesters outside the Delaney Hall detention center in Newark, New Jersey.
The violence broke out during a multi-day standoff over a hunger strike involving roughly 300 detainees who are protesting "inedible food" and medical neglect. Tensions escalated further when New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill was denied entry to the privately run facility to inspect living conditions. While the Department of Homeland Security maintains that detainees receive adequate care, border officials have warned they may begin force-feeding strikers if their health declines.
Lawmakers are now calling for a formal state investigation and greater transparency regarding the treatment of those held inside the facility.
