On Thursday, the U.S. State Department sanctioned Tanzanian police official Faustine Jackson Mafwele for gross human rights violations.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced the travel ban following credible reports that Mafwele directed the torture and sexual assault of two activists. The victims, Kenyan activist Boniface Mwangi and Ugandan activist Agather Atuhaire, were detained last year while observing the political climate in Tanzania. This designation marks a sharp escalation in U.S. pressure on President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s government amid reports of a deteriorating rights environment.
The Tanzanian government has not yet issued a formal response to the ban, which also affects Mafwele's immediate family members.
