Non-Interventionism is a political ideology centered on the principle that a nation should avoid becoming involved in the internal affairs, conflicts, or disputes of other countries, particularly through military means. This approach advocates for a foreign policy that prioritizes diplomatic engagement, trade, and peaceful coexistence, while rejecting the use of force or coercion to influence the domestic matters of other states. The roots of non-interventionism can be traced back to early modern political thought, particularly in the aftermath of the Thirty Years’ War in Europe, which led to the Peace of Westphalia in 1648. This treaty established the principle of state sovereignty and non-interference, laying the groundwork for modern international relations. Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, non-interventionism was often invoked as a guiding principle by various statesmen and philosophers who were wary of the destabilizing effects of foreign entanglements and imperial ambitions.

In the 20th century, non-interventionism gained renewed attention in response to the devastation of the world wars and the rise of international organizations like the League of Nations and the United Nations, which sought to balance collective security with respect for national sovereignty. The ideology has often been contrasted with interventionist or expansionist policies, especially during periods of imperialism, the Cold War, and more recent humanitarian interventions. While critics argue that strict non-interventionism can enable human rights abuses or allow aggressive regimes to act unchecked, its proponents maintain that it is a prudent and ethical approach that minimizes unnecessary conflict and upholds the autonomy of nations.
