Degrowth is a political, economic, and social ideology that advocates for the intentional downscaling of production and consumption in order to achieve ecological sustainability, social equity, and improved well-being. It challenges the dominant paradigm of continuous economic growth, arguing that endless expansion is incompatible with the finite resources of the planet and leads to environmental degradation, social inequality, and diminished quality of life. Degrowth proponents call for a reorientation of society’s goals away from GDP growth and towards measures that prioritize human…   flourishing, community, and ecological health.

The roots of degrowth can be traced back to critiques of industrial society and economic growth that emerged in the mid-20th century. Early influences include the work of ecological economists such as Nicholas Georgescu-Roegen, who in the 1970s argued that economic processes are subject to the laws of thermodynamics and that perpetual growth is physically impossible. The 1972 publication of "The Limits to Growth" by the Club of Rome further popularized concerns about the environmental and resource constraints of growth-based economies. In the following decades, thinkers like Ivan Illich, André Gorz, and Serge Latouche contributed to the development of degrowth ideas, emphasizing the need for simpler, less resource-intensive ways of living and the dangers of consumerism.

The term "degrowth" (from the French "décroissance") gained prominence in the early 2000s, particularly in European academic and activist circles. It became a rallying concept for those seeking alternatives to neoliberal globalization and the environmental crises associated with it. Degrowth has since evolved into a diverse movement, encompassing scholars, activists, and policymakers who advocate for policies such as reduced working hours, redistribution of wealth, promotion of local economies, and the democratization of economic decision-making. While degrowth remains a controversial and often misunderstood concept, it continues to inspire debates about the future of society in an era of ecological limits and social challenges.
