Unlike fiscal conservatism, which prioritizes balanced budgets, limited government spending, and low taxes, fiscal progressivism advocates for a more active role of the state in redistributing wealth and investing in social programs such as healthcare, education, and infrastructure. The ideology has often been associated with social democratic and left-leaning political parties, but elements of fiscal progressivism have also been adopted by centrist and even some conservative governments during times of crisis. In the late 20th and early 21st centuries, debates over fiscal progressivism have continued, particularly in the context of globalization, rising inequality, and the challenges of funding social programs in aging societies.
