This report used computer modeling to project the consequences of unchecked economic and population growth, arguing that humanity was on a collision course with the planet's ecological boundaries. The oil crises of the 1970s, growing awareness of pollution, and the emergence of global environmental issues like climate change further fueled the development of Limits-Aware thinking.

Over time, this ideology has influenced a range of political movements and policy debates, from environmentalism and degrowth advocacy to calls for steady-state economies and planetary boundaries frameworks.
