The "Humanitarian Interventionist" political ideology is centered on the belief that states, international organizations, or coalitions have a moral obligation to intervene in the affairs of other countries when gross human rights violations, such as genocide, ethnic cleansing, or crimes against humanity, are occurring. This ideology asserts that the principle of state sovereignty can be overridden in cases where a government is unwilling or unable to protect its own citizens from severe harm. The failures to prevent genocides in Rwanda and Bosnia in the 1990s, and the subsequent NATO intervention in Kosovo in 1999, brought humanitarian intervention to the forefront of international relations. These events led to the development of the "Responsibility to Protect" (R2P) doctrine, which was endorsed by the United Nations in 2005 and further solidified the idea that the international community has a duty to intervene when states fail to safeguard their populations from mass atrocities.

Throughout its history, humanitarian interventionism has been both praised for its moral clarity and criticized for its potential to be used as a pretext for pursuing national interests or for undermining international law and sovereignty. Debates continue over when and how interventions should occur, who should authorize them, and how to balance respect for sovereignty with the imperative to prevent suffering. Despite these controversies, humanitarian interventionism remains a significant and influential ideology in global politics, shaping debates about the ethical responsibilities of states and the international community in the face of humanitarian crises.
