A planned economy is an economic system in which the government or a central authority makes all decisions regarding the production and distribution of goods and services. Unlike market economies, where supply and demand determine economic outcomes, a planned economy relies on centralized planning to allocate resources, set prices, and determine what goods should be produced, in what quantities, and for whom. The underlying political ideology of a planned economy is rooted in the belief that collective or state control over economic activity can lead to greater social equality, eliminate…   wasteful competition, and ensure that the needs of the population are met more efficiently than through the free market.

The concept of a planned economy emerged in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, influenced by socialist and Marxist theories that criticized the inequalities and instabilities of capitalism. Early proponents argued that only through central planning could society avoid the cycles of boom and bust, unemployment, and exploitation associated with unregulated markets. The idea gained significant traction after the Russian Revolution of 1917, when the Soviet Union implemented a command economy as part of its broader socialist transformation. Over the twentieth century, various forms of planned economies were adopted in other countries, particularly in Eastern Europe, Asia, and parts of Africa, often as part of broader socialist or communist political projects.

While planned economies were initially credited with rapid industrialization and the ability to mobilize resources for large-scale projects, they also faced criticism for inefficiency, lack of innovation, and the suppression of individual choice. Over time, many countries with planned economies began to introduce market mechanisms or transition toward mixed economies, especially after the late twentieth century when the limitations of central planning became more apparent. Despite this, the planned economy remains an important concept in political and economic thought, representing an alternative to market-driven systems and continuing to influence debates about the role of the state in economic life.
