Populism is a political ideology or approach that centers on the idea of representing the interests and will of "the people" against a perceived elite or establishment. Rather than being tied to a specific set of policies or a consistent left-right position, populism is characterized by its rhetorical style and its framing of politics as a struggle between the virtuous, ordinary masses and a corrupt, self-serving elite. The history of populism stretches back to the nineteenth century, with early examples including the People's Party in the United States, which emerged in the 1890s to champion the interests of farmers and laborers against industrialists and bankers. In Europe and Latin America, various populist movements have arisen at different times, often in response to economic crises, social upheaval, or widespread dissatisfaction with existing political systems. Populism can manifest on both the left and the right of the political spectrum; left-wing populists typically emphasize economic inequality and social justice, while right-wing populists often focus on issues of national identity, immigration, and opposition to globalization.

Throughout its history, populism has been both praised and criticized. Supporters argue that it can revitalize democracy by giving voice to groups who feel excluded or ignored by mainstream politics. Critics, however, warn that populism can undermine democratic norms, foster division, and concentrate power in the hands of charismatic leaders who claim to embody the will of the people. Because populism is defined more by its style and its opposition to elites than by a fixed ideology, it has proven adaptable to a wide range of political contexts and continues to be a significant force in global politics.
