Transhumanism is a political and philosophical ideology centered on the belief that humanity can and should use advanced technology to radically enhance human physical and cognitive abilities, extend lifespan, and ultimately transcend biological limitations. Rooted in Enlightenment ideals of progress and rationality, transhumanism envisions a future where science and technology are harnessed not just to improve society, but to fundamentally transform the human condition itself. This includes the pursuit of technologies such as artificial intelligence, genetic engineering, nanotechnology,…   and cybernetics, with the aim of overcoming aging, disease, and even death.

The origins of transhumanist thought can be traced back to early 20th-century thinkers like J.B.S. Haldane and Julian Huxley, who speculated about the potential for science to direct human evolution. The term "transhumanism" itself was popularized by Huxley in the 1950s, who described it as the idea of humanity transcending itself by realizing new possibilities of and for human nature. In the late 20th century, the ideology gained momentum with the rise of digital technology and the internet, leading to the formation of organized movements and advocacy groups such as the World Transhumanist Association (now Humanity+), founded in 1998.

Transhumanism as a political ideology advocates for policies that support scientific research, technological innovation, and individual autonomy in the use of enhancement technologies. It often emphasizes values such as rationality, open access to technology, and the ethical imperative to reduce suffering and expand human potential. While transhumanism is not tied to any single political tradition, it frequently intersects with libertarian, liberal, and techno-progressive currents, and sometimes sparks debate over issues like inequality, consent, and the risks of unchecked technological power. Over the past few decades, transhumanism has evolved from a fringe intellectual movement into a more visible and organized political force, influencing public debates about the future of humanity and the ethical challenges posed by emerging technologies.
