This approach emphasizes the importance of adhering to universal ethical standards—such as justice, fairness, human rights, and respect for individual autonomy—regardless of the potential costs or benefits in specific situations. Throughout history, this perspective has influenced various political movements and leaders who have insisted on the primacy of ethical principles in public life. For example, abolitionists in the 19th century often appealed to the inherent immorality of slavery, regardless of economic or social arguments to the contrary. Similarly, the civil rights movements of the 20th century frequently invoked universal principles of equality and justice.

Principled Ethics as a political ideology often stands in contrast to consequentialist or utilitarian approaches, which focus on achieving the greatest good for the greatest number, even if that means compromising on certain ethical standards. Critics of Principled Ethics sometimes argue that rigid adherence to principles can lead to impractical or even harmful outcomes, while supporters maintain that sacrificing core values for expediency ultimately erodes trust and moral authority in politics.
