In Western thought, Aristotle discussed the idea in his work "Nicomachean Ethics," where he distinguished between distributive and corrective justice, emphasizing proportionality in the distribution of goods. Over time, the concept evolved through the works of philosophers such as Thomas Aquinas, who integrated Christian theology with Aristotelian ideas, and later Enlightenment thinkers like John Locke and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, who debated the role of property, equality, and the social contract in just societies.

In the modern era, distributive justice became a central concern in political philosophy, especially with the rise of industrialization and the emergence of stark economic inequalities. Theories of distributive justice have been developed by thinkers such as John Rawls, who argued for the "difference principle," which holds that inequalities are just only if they benefit the least advantaged members of society. Other theorists, like Robert Nozick, have critiqued redistributive policies, emphasizing individual rights and entitlements.

Distributive justice is not tied to a single political system or country; rather, it is a framework that informs debates across the political spectrum, from socialism and social democracy, which advocate for more egalitarian distributions, to libertarianism, which prioritizes individual liberty and voluntary exchange. The ideology continues to shape discussions about taxation, welfare, healthcare, education, and other policies aimed at addressing social and economic inequalities. Throughout history, the pursuit of distributive justice has reflected changing moral, economic, and political contexts, but its central concern remains the creation of a fair and just society.
