Territorial Integrity

You believe existing national borders should be respected and preserved, because allowing secession invites instability and conflict.

The political ideology of "Territorial Integrity" centers on the principle that the borders and territory of a recognized state should not be violated or altered by external forces. This concept is rooted in the idea that a state's sovereignty is intrinsically linked to its geographic boundaries, and that any attempt to annex, invade, or otherwise change these borders without the consent of the state in question is illegitimate. Territorial integrity is closely associated with the modern international system of nation-states, which emerged in the wake of the Peace of Westphal…  ia in 1648. This treaty established the precedent that states have exclusive authority within their own territories and that interference from outside powers is unacceptable.

Over time, the principle of territorial integrity became a cornerstone of international law and diplomacy. It was further enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations in 1945, particularly in Article 2(4), which prohibits the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state. The ideology gained prominence during the decolonization period of the mid-20th century, as newly independent countries sought to protect their borders from external aggression and internal secessionist movements. Territorial integrity has often been invoked in response to separatist movements, border disputes, and acts of military aggression, serving as a justification for the defense of existing borders.

Despite its widespread acceptance, the ideology of territorial integrity has sometimes come into conflict with other principles, such as the right to self-determination. Debates continue over whether the preservation of existing borders should take precedence over the aspirations of distinct groups seeking independence or autonomy. Nevertheless, territorial integrity remains a fundamental concept in international relations, shaping the way states interact and resolve disputes over land and sovereignty.
