This ideology stands in contrast to particularism, which prioritizes the unique traditions, interests, or values of specific groups or nations.

The concept was further developed in the context of human rights, especially after the atrocities of World War II, leading to the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the United Nations in 1948.
