Self-Determination

You believe every distinct people or culture has the right to govern itself and form its own state if it chooses.

Self-determination is a political ideology centered on the principle that peoples and nations have the right to freely choose their own political status and to pursue their economic, social, and cultural development without external interference. The concept is rooted in the belief that legitimate government must be based on the will of the people, and that groups with distinct identities—such as ethnic, cultural, or national communities—should have the autonomy to govern themselves or even seek independence if they so desire.

Historically, the idea of self-determination…   gained prominence during the Enlightenment, as philosophers began to challenge the legitimacy of monarchies and empires that ruled over diverse populations without their consent. The ideology became particularly influential in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, as nationalist movements across Europe and the Americas sought to break away from imperial rule and establish nation-states based on shared identity and popular sovereignty. The principle was further enshrined in international law after World War I, most notably through U.S. President Woodrow Wilson’s Fourteen Points, which advocated for the rights of nations to self-governance as a foundation for lasting peace.

After World War II, self-determination became a central tenet of the decolonization process, as former colonies in Africa, Asia, and the Caribbean demanded independence from European powers. The United Nations Charter explicitly recognized the right of peoples to self-determination, and the ideology has since played a significant role in shaping international relations and the emergence of new states. However, the application of self-determination remains complex and sometimes contentious, as it can conflict with the principles of territorial integrity and sovereignty of existing states. Despite these challenges, self-determination continues to inspire movements for autonomy, independence, and democratic governance around the world.
