Multiculturalism is a political ideology and social philosophy that emphasizes the recognition, acceptance, and promotion of cultural diversity within a society. It advocates for the coexistence of different cultural, ethnic, and religious groups, encouraging the preservation of distinct cultural identities rather than assimilation into a dominant culture. Multiculturalists argue that a society is enriched when it acknowledges and values the contributions of its various cultural communities, and that public policies should reflect this diversity through inclusive practices in education, law…  , and public life.

The roots of multiculturalism as a political ideology can be traced back to the post-World War II era, particularly in response to increased migration and the decolonization process, which brought a greater variety of cultures into Western societies. In the latter half of the twentieth century, countries such as Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom began to formally adopt multicultural policies, moving away from assimilationist approaches that had previously sought to absorb minority cultures into a dominant national identity. The ideology gained further traction during the civil rights movements of the 1960s and 1970s, which challenged institutional racism and called for greater recognition of minority rights and identities.

Multiculturalism has since become a subject of both support and controversy. Proponents argue that it fosters social cohesion, mutual respect, and equal opportunities, while critics claim it can lead to social fragmentation, undermine national unity, or hinder integration. Despite these debates, multiculturalism remains a significant framework for understanding and managing cultural diversity in many contemporary societies, shaping debates on immigration, citizenship, and national identity.
