Cuba’s energy minister announced the island has completely exhausted its supplies of diesel and fuel oil, triggering massive, non-stop rolling blackouts.
The shortage is a result of a long-standing U.S. trade embargo and the depletion of emergency oil donations recently provided by Russia. Protests have flared in Havana and eastern provinces as citizens face life without electricity for lights, cooking, or water pumps. The government is currently appealing to any international supplier willing to sell fuel to the island to prevent a total grid collapse.
Officials warn that the energy crisis will likely intensify until a major new shipment arrives from a foreign ally.
