Europe is facing a renewed energy crisis as the war in Iran disrupts fuel supplies, particularly diesel and jet fuel, and sends energy prices soaring.
The European Union has rolled out emergency measures, including temporary subsidies, relaxed state aid rules, and plans to cut electricity taxes to shield households and businesses from the impact. The crisis has exposed the EU's ongoing dependence on imported fossil fuels and prompted calls for a rapid transition to renewables and increased energy independence. EU leaders are also considering coordinated gas storage, boosting heat pump and renewable energy adoption, and even encouraging remote work to reduce demand.
Despite these efforts, concerns remain about the adequacy of the response, with warnings of possible jet fuel shortages, risks to travel, and the need for more ambitious, long-term solutions.
