Telling government to spend more money is usually a bad idea. Instead, we should ask ourselves how do we create a transportation system that is equitable, modern and built around sustainable modes of transportation and sustainable energy. Then, we get the price tag from there and look at it in terms of a long-term investment with an eventual ROI.

Short answer: Yes, but preferably privatize it.

Long answer: Where I used to live, it took 2 hours to go by bus where it would take 30 minutes to go by car. So yes, public transportation needs to be improved. People need buses to get to work affordably, since having to walk limits their job choices and takes away time from work, family, and sleep. So if we do not have buses, then people will not be able to go to work, and that will be terrible for them and for the economy overall. Yes and no, state usually allows outdated equipment to stay on the roads because the lack of needed maintenance and upgrading. Private usually can keep cost down and have a lot more in-house, but usually doesn’t invest in city buses or local subways.
